Impressive Foals By Rock Hero

This spring’s second crop of foals by young Victorian stallion Rock Hero represent an excellent array of mares by leading broodmare sires.

Mares covered by Rock Hero due to foal included daughters of Encosta de Lago, Redoute's Choice, Zabeel, Canny Lad, Commands, Desert King, Mossman, Tale Of The Cat, Choisir, Nicconi, Volksraad, So You Think, Hussonet, Testa Rossa and Danehill Dancer.

Rock Hero is standing at Chris and Kathie Bakker's Lauriston Park beside veteran sire Desert King.

Chris Bakker has been impressed by the size, quality and scope of Rock Hero’s first crop born last spring.

"He is such a lovely, big, strong horse and it is great to see him stamping his progeny with his own class and style," he said.

"I am so pleased with how his first foals are maturing, they are very correct and athletic with great temperaments.”

Rock Hero, trained by David Payne, was a talented racehorse with an impressive turn of foot that he displayed to win the Listed Dulcify Quality over 1600m at Randwick.

Rock Hero is bred on the same Fastnet Rock/Galileo cross as G1 winners Intricately, Rivet, Qualify, Zhukova and Magicool. It is a cross that boasts an outstanding 17.7% stakes winners to runners strike rate.

His sire Fastnet Rock has sired 121 stakes winners including 28 G1 winners and has been represented by winners in 20 different countries. His statistics make for impressive reading; a 68.2% winners-to-runners strike rate with 8.5% stakes winners to runners.

Fastnet Rock’s successful sons at study include Foxwedge, Hinchinbrook, Stryker, Your Song, Smart Missile, Rothesay and Wanted.

Rock Hero is a son of the classy and durable mare Gallant Tess, who spent most of her career racing in stakes company.

She won five races including the G2 Chelmsford Stakes and G2 Breeders' Classic and was placed in five G1 events to be among the best of the locally bred progeny by Galileo.

Galileo has become an outstanding broodmare force with his daughters already producing 77 stakes winners including 13 at the elite level.

Rock Hero is a descendant of the incomparable Mumtaz Mahal, ancestress of such outstanding stallions as Nasrullah, Royal Charger, Mahmoud, Kalamoun, Danewin, Mossman and Commands.

Desert King, the sire of champions in both hemispheres including the great Makybe Diva, has been represented by 27 stakes winners including six G1 winners.

He is now 24 and will cover a select book of mares this season.
