Another Snitzel Group Double

Champion sire Snitzel is maintaining a healthy lead at the top of the national sires' premiership tables with another weekend of notable results by his progeny taking his earnings in the first six weeks of the season to more than $1.89 million

Leading the way was the exciting Snitzel colt Menari and his proven G1 winner Russian Revolution.

After their G2 successes Snitzel's stakes record in the first 40 days of this season stands at eight winners of nine Group and Listed races.

Menari dominated his rivals in the G2 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill to lay down his claim as favourite for the upcoming $1 million Golden Rose while Russian Revolution started his build up to the first running of the $10 million Everest with a tradesman win in the G2 Ian McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Menari looked to be worth every cent of his growing value as he took control in the final 250 metres to win by 1.5 lengths in the fast time of 1:08.59 from the highly-regarded Redoute’s Choice colt Pariah.

"I was lucky enough to have a horse like Snitzel who I thought was a very good horse, then I had Snitzerland, then along came Rubick,” Ryan said.

“But when this horse came along before he raced I thought this is a fair dinkum, genuine horse. I reckon there's only been two other horses I've clocked sectionals as quick as him."

Menari is raced by his breeder George Altomonte's Corumbene Stud. Altomonte retained him after he was withdrawn from the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

He was bred from Isurava (General Nediym), a stakes-winning juvenile and sister to G2 winner Ichihara and Listed winner Au Chocolat from the family of champion stayer Tie The Knot.

Isurava is the dam of two winners from three runners, with Menari the first stakes winner.

Menari’s second dam Cut A Dash (Whiskey Road) is a three-quarter sister to Whisked (Whiskey Road), the dam of multiple G1 winner Tie The Knot (Nassipour) and Listed winners Hood (Shamardal) and Dream Ballad (Singspiel).

Altomonte has Menari's 2YO full sister Sweet Ava in work with Gerald Ryan and Isurava is due to produce a Not A Single Doubt foal this spring.

Menari has now had seven starts for three wins and a second with his career prize money standing at $520,550.

Russian Revolution, already a G1 winner last March of the Galaxy at Rosehill, recorded his sixth win in nine starts for his trainers Peter and Paul Snowden with his classy win over Heatherly and Houtzen at Moonee Valley.

Russian Revolution's earnings are now more than three times the $320,000 that Michael Wallace and China Horse Club gave for him at as a yearling in 2015. He is raced by a syndicate that includes Newgate Farm, Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock and Matthew Sandblom’s Horse Ventures.

Russian Revolution (Snitzel x Ballet D’Amour by Stravinsky) is destined to retire to stud next year.

He is out of the US-winning Stravinsky mare Ballet D’Amour, a half-sister to stakes winner Taletobetold (Tale Of The Cat) and comes from the same family of Flying Spur (Danehill) and Encosta De Lago (Fairy King).

Ballet D’Amour has produced four foals to race who are all winners.

R7 ROSEHILL 9 September 2017
The Run To The Rose 3 , 1200m
Race Synopsis: Menari advanced after his impressive first-up win in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at this track on 12 August to score brilliantly here, claiming clear favouritism for Saturday week’s Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in the process. He showed good pace as he worked to overcome his outside barrier (10) before settling in second place. He got the better of the leader (Perast) at the 200m and then went to score a very strong win, and in very fast time (1:08.59). The San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Pariah had an ideal trip in third place, briefly looked dangerous when he challenged at the 200m and then fought gamely for second in a strong effort, albeit in finding the winner too good. The $101 chance Perast was quickly away and took the lead. He grabbed a good break coming to the home turn and held on very well for third in a bold effort. Kementari raced back in sixth place, one off the rails. He put in a run from the 300m got to fourth at the 200m and then kept fighting on well for (3.2 lengths) fourth in a sound first-up effort. Shogun Sun was back in last place to the home turn. He went deeper at the 300m and caught the eye in running on late for (3.4 lengths) fifth, looking suited to further.
