Special Day For Peter O'Brien

Popular Hunter Valley identity Peter O’Brien enjoyed one of those special days on September 2 that most involved in the racing and breeding industry can only dream about.

O’Brien, renowned as the former stud manager for Coolmore Australia and now as general manager of Segenhoe Stud, celebrated on three fronts due the wins of Merchant Navy, Voodoo Lad and the mighty Winx in Melbourne and Sydney.

O’Brien is a part-owner of the unbeaten Fastnet Rock colt Merchant Navy Horseform and had plenty to cheer about as he surged to an impressive win in the G3 HDF McNeil Stakes at Caulfield.

That win preceded the win by Voodoo Lad Horseform in the G3 The Heath, another big result for O’Brien as the quality sprinter races in the familiar red and yellow silks of Segenhoe Stud.

O’Brien then savoured the fabulous win by Winx Horseform in the G2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick more than most as he has had attachment to the mare almost from the day she was born.

Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock x Legally Bay by Snippets) is now unbeaten in four career starts and heading towards some big spring targets.

O’Brien holds a share in the colt only because he fronted Ciaron Maher after the Victorian trainer paid $350,000 for the colt at last year’s Easter sale in Sydney when he was offered by Segenhoe on behalf of his breeders Chris and jane Barham.

“I went up to Ciaron after he was sold and asked if I could buy a share in the colt. Chris and Jane stayed in as well, while a few of the lads from Coolmore also got involved,” O’Brien said of how the ownership group came together.

“This is once-in-a-lifetime for me. You don’t get too many unbeaten colts by Fastnet Rock and to top it all off he’s a full brother to a Group 2 winner in Jolie Bay out of a multiple stakes winning Snippets mare in Legally Bay.

“He’s also closely related to Myer Classic winner Bonaria. There are lots of very good horses in that family.

“He is still really a baby so I reckon you’ll see the best of him next autumn. It’s all very exciting.”

O’Brien was impressed with the performance of the Darren Weir-trained Voodoo Lad in The Heath.

“Gee, he’s a great horse,” O’Brien said. “He’s either won or been placed in 19 of 22 starts and was second in the Newmarket in March.

“It was great to see him back in the winner’s circle on Saturday - fingers crossed he has a big spring in store.”

The 6YO Voodoo Lad (I Am Invincible x O'Fortuna by Gilded Time) secured his fourth win at stakes level in The Heath.

O’Brien is one of Winx’s greatest fans with good cause.

He was managing Coolmore when the wonder mare was foaled down at the Hunter Valley nursery and has watched her go from her first wobbly steps to greatness.

Winx (Street Cry x Vegas Showgirl by Al Akbar) has won 23 of her 29 starts and prize money of $13,183,425. She is unbeaten in her last 19 races.

Winx wins Chelmsford in thriller!

Bred by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, Winx was purchased by Magic Bloodstock for $230,000 out of the Coolmore Stud draft at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is one of four named foals out of dual Listed winner Vegas Showgirl (Al Akbar), who was crowned Australian Broodmare Of The Year last year.

Vegas Showgirl followed O’Brien to Segenhoe after he left Coolmore.

Segenhoe prepared Winx’s half-brother by Snitzel for last year’s Easter Yearling Sale where he made $2.3 million. After missing to Snitzel the following spring, Vegas Showgirl produced a filly in 2016 and was put in foal to Exceed And Excel.

She is set to produce her next foal this month.

“No decision has been made as yet on who she’ll be covered by this time around but there are any number of options,” O’Brien said.

“Depending on the type she produces she might go back to Exceed And Excel but there are lots of choices.

“Vegas Showgirl usually runs a week over the foaling date. I have my fingers crossed that it’s a filly.”

R7 RANDWICK 2 September 2017
Tatts Club Chelmsford Stakes 3U , 1600m
Race Synopsis: Winx was amazing, yet again, in taking out her 19th successive victory. She began well on this occasion (racing in ear muffs for the first time, after missing the start badly before her first-up win in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) here on 19 August and settled back in fifth place, behind a good tempo. Hugh Bowman took her to a distant fourth nearing the home turn, when conceding the leader (Red Excitement) about eight lengths. She went to second at the 200m, still some five lengths back, before coming with her relentless finishing bid to hit the front at the 50m and then go on to score courageously. Red Excitement, having his second run this preparation, went to the front as expected but Josh Parr led him run along, establishing a large advantage at the 800m. He was only overhauled in the final 50m after a bold performance for a very good second. The New Zealand-trained Chocante, having his first run since winning the Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) at Doomben in June, chased the leader (Red Excitement) and put up a really good effort in holding on for third.
